About This Game

Solstice is a very retro wargame, heavily inspired by the classic games Lords of Midnight, Doomdarks Revenge and Sorderon's Shadow. Solstice is not a remake of any of these games but takes its lead from these games to develop a new gaming challenge for lovers of turn-based, menu driven strategy. Displayed using hand-drawn artwork, and using a pseudo-3D technique, often referred to as landscaping, which echoes the games of the time.

Set in the mythical land of Dourfrost, a land, trapped in an eternal winter, a land of fantastic beasts, magic and war,

Explore and battle across an open world, populated with 11 different mythical races (at launch), and well over a hundred and twenty characters, each with his or her likes, dislikes, needs, aims, desires and loyalties that shape the game and conflicts to come.

On release, Solstice will feature one very challenging, turn-based scenario, offering many hours of game-play.

The Rise of the Demon King.

While the lords and ladies of Dourfrost have squabbled over petty disputes and brokered and broken pacts and alliances, a dark power has been rising in the south. A power that will shake the entire land and threatens to overwhelm all that stands before it, and enslave everyone in its path.

Sator Grimward, a dark sorcerer, once thought long defeated, has risen again and united the tribes of the Ice Guard. Can Calith, king of the free folk muster the lords and ladies of Dourfrost, and overcome old bitterness, to bring a force of Freefolk, Dwarfs, Fey, Sidhe, Giants, and 6 other races together to defeat the rising storm.

JimJams games are a small, indie development team with a love for the retro games of the '80s and '90s. We only develop games that embrace that era, aiming to provide true classicly styled gaming, with a massive retro feel, maybe with a slight hint of what these games would have been with a little more processing power.

We don't aim to develop AAA games, but simply to bring our passion for a time gone by to those who love truly classic themed and inspired games. If this is a genre and era that you love, then our games are for you. 6d5b4406ea

    The game is good.
I usually start being sceptic when I see great graphics on a visual novel.
I mean, if you got no story, you might try to lure people with great artwork and music.
And in the end the visual nove experience becomes a great disappoinment.
Because the content is not good.
    Not here though.
This is an exceptional game, made with a lot of devotion and love.
As a gamer I can tell.
As a developer I can tell too.
The game visual art is unique and superb and it collaborates in harmony with particles used. I really feel the struggle not to overdo it there.
The music is simple as it should be. It is magnificent and fits well with the whole artwork, helping you dive in the game world, like the water helps you slide on a waterslide.
The sound fx are great too. I just want to mention some volume differences that might seem odd to some people, specifically barking dogs could be a little less loud than they are, but that was not a critical mistake or something.
I am currently in Chapter 2, making decisions all the time and taking a branch of the story. Almost all the characters are well thought and placed to the story, I feel that the two protagonists are forced by fate to meet each other, but on the other hand it is GREAT novelty and cool idea to see things by two people than one.
I really have enjoed the game so far and I believe that it deserves your attention.
I find the price of 18 Euro a little odd for a visual novel, but thinking of the business, the people involved and the end result, it seems like a decent price. If you are a fan of visual novels and play the game through the many branches, I believe it will worth the price and for sure, even playing it once, it seems a great experience.
I will update the review after finishing it.
. Solstice is a visual-novel game with a steam-punkish fantasy setting. As you follow a well-thought-out multi-perspective story, you dive deeper into the social structures and secrets of a city secluded within an ice desert. This is definitely not for lovers of Disney-type storytelling, as the atmosphere becomes successively darker.

The game mechanics require you to read through rather a bit of dialogue. However, the story is very well-told and entertaining. Decisions are made by choosing options for dialogue or actions and can have quite an impact on the unfolding of story. Bits of the narrative, which are influence by your decisions, are marked during gameplay.

What struck me most about this game, were the beautiful and detailed backgrounds and characters designed with loving attention to detail. And if you—like me—enjoy games that do not rely on heavily sexualized (female) characters, heteronormativity, whiteness, and age uniformity, you will definitely savor this game.

A slight drawback: the character slides were quite few, so that I got a bit fed up with the recurring “animations” at later stages. One or two more emotions per character would have done the game good.

TL;DR: A visual novel with lovely game design, very good story, and authentic characters. Special plus: diversity and queerness. Slight minus: too few character animations.
. Shoehorned sexytime infront of a madman's ghost: Solstice is a strange little title.
It boasts a pretty narrative set in an established world, well-sculpted dialogue and fitting music.

Some of the character interactions are a bit strange (they animated a couple of kiss scenes, for instance, which feel like they're thrust together with the same casual comfort as the others gesticulate), and I feel that some of the scenes could be more to the point.

Has most of the technical systems I'd expect in a modern VN, although it's a bit limited on save spaces and I think the skip feature a bit too minimal - if you're looking for completion% you'll be a bit let down. The autoplay is nice and most of the time you can view previous dialogue (although there are some unwarranted cut-offs around dramatic action). The subtle "variants" on the endings as a mark of accomplishment aren't really my thing; a good ending disrupted by an extremely early dialogue choice seems unkind to the player. Further, a lot of the recycled dialogue in these slight variations is considered "new" to the player, and hence unskippable, making the gameplay akin to Clicker Heroes.

There's something silly about imposing an emotional compass as visual novel choices: direct, consequence-orientated actions described as such always seems the most appropriate to me. I think Solstice's conversational prompts are a tad too cryptic in the context of 'absolute' completion. For a single playthrough however, they offer enough for you to feel mildly involved in the storyline.

I'm having enough fun that I'd consider recommending it as a good example of the Western VN - and depending on what themes you're after, this might do a uniquely good job - but if I had to choose something to represent that geographical subgenre it'd sooner be VA-11 Hall-A or KS.. I really enjoyed this game. The production values are very high, particularly the graphics--the backgrounds in particular are nothing short of impressive. Somebody put a lot of love into all of them, and even seemingly throwaway areas you'll probably never seem more than once or tiwce are meticulously detailed.

Obviously, though, the story and characters are the important part, and all of them were great. The story is well paced and keeps moving along, hitting all the right notes of letting you spend enough time with the characters to get to know them, but not at the expense of belaboring things or dragging on too long.

In short, I thought it was pretty great. Easily among the top visual novels I've experienced, and I'd comfortably recommend it to any fan of the genre.. Please note: That I played through this game fully twice off-Steam so the playtime is not accurate.

Solstice is a detective mystery where you play as two investigators. The creators describe it best in the product summary.

Similar to dating sims, each playthrough only gives you a slice of the story, and you need multiple playthroughs to get the big picture.

MoaCube features a much higher quality of writing compared to the average visual novel. It is written by two psychologists, and will challenge your biases and play with your perceptions. It is easy to finish the game with a decent Main ending, but it takes clever tradeoffs and gaming to figure out the backstories of the various characters involved. It took me 2 playthroughs to figure out the stories of most of the characters, and there's probably still threads of story I'm missing.

This is an amazing way to spend this year's winter solstice.. Solstice is pretty much everything I'm looking for in a visual novel. It has great characters, an interesting story, and beautiful artwork. You control two different characters that have traveled to a lush domed city in the middle of a frozen wasteland. The dome is faltering and you need to find out why, before everyone freezes to death. Each time I learned a bit more, I found myself guessing who was behind it, and then second-guessing my guesses all the way to the end.
